Business Profile

Black Mountain Quarries Ltd is a family-owned business based in the heart of the Black Mountains. Our four working quarries provide block stone for building and walling; flagstones for internal flooring and external paving; and split stone for traditional and modern roofing tiles. We also offer bespoke stone for commercial landscaping such as boulders and monoliths, and smaller uncut stone for natural garden features such as rockeries. To complement our natural stone products we offer a range of solid and engineered oak flooring for customers who share our passion for traditional materials in the modern built environment.
We started our business in 2005 on the family farm in Herefordshire, at the foot of the Black Mountains. The stone we quarry here in Tybubach - technically a red Devonian sandstone - is characterised by its green-grey colouring combined with russet brown tones. It became our very first product and we named it BMQ Random Building stone. Having been used historically in the region it was initially very popular for local projects. The quality and colouring of the stone quickly led to national demand, and the business expanded from there.

In 2006 we opened Llandraw Quarry a mile along the valley. The stone is identical in colouring and quality to Tybubach, but its natural laminations gave us the opportunity to cut flagstones and traditional stone roofing. In 2007 we took on Callow Hill Quarry in Monmouthshire, which enabled us to offer a different type and colour of building stone and block stone. Finally, in 2011 when the De Lank Quarry came up for sale in Cornwall we jumped at the chance to include its beautiful Cornish granite in our group.

Black Mountain Quarries' natural stone and timber materials are appropriate for either commercial or domestic projects. Our customers include architects, specifiers, builders, developers and private individuals throughout the UK and Europe. We have recently started exporting to Canada.

Although we'll admit to favouring our local stone, we recognise that customers want the widest possible choice of materials and prices. To support this demand we source high quality natural building materials from 16 other quarries. Some of these quarries are relatively local in the UK and Ireland, and others are based overseas; you'll see country of origin flags on all of our products so you know where they come from. We are happy to now be able to offer over 30 types and colour of natural stone.

We apply the same high value to our workforce as we do to our products. All our staff live locally and are permanently employed. We are proud to have helped revive traditional methods of hand-dressing and finishing stone, and have supported various staff through training in these historic skills. Of the quarries which are not owned by us, we have visited all of them in person to see their working methods and practises, we are happy to act as distributors and importers on their behalf.

We're passionate about natural materials because they enhance environments. Their appearance improves with the passing of time, and they are non-polluting. All of the products that we supply are 100% natural, having been merely been shaped, cropped or carved to suit their intended purpose.

Outdoor display area
We'd be delighted for you to visit the quarry and see the products for yourselves. We have an outdoor display area at our sales office which includes our full range of natural stone, and you are welcome to visit during office hours.

Our opening hours are:
8.30 to 17.00 Monday to Friday
9.00 to 12.30 on Saturday.
